My online poker adventures

A Tuesday late-night session was vastly productive. My winningest session ever in terms of BBs gained -- I started with 1705 and ended with 1910 -- even after losing ~$55 in 2 huge hands early in the session.

I was catching all kinds of cards, and too frequently my opponent called me with a playable 2nd-best hand. When I was all-in as a healthy favorite my hands held up. At the end of the night I had $140, $75, $60 and $50 at my 4 tables respectively.

First the early downswing:

I decided against 3-bet push preflop with KK, because any sensible opponent would let go QQ to TT, and I would only get called by AA. So I just called and hoped to milk another flop bet from these hands. The flop was T-high but monotone in spades, I didn't have Ks, so it was quite bad for me. EP led out, I pushed. EP thought for a long while, called with QQ and then completed his flush.

Losing to a megadonk really sucked. This is the 2nd time he cracked my AA -- the first time he completed a gutshot, and I saved myself $4 by getting away. I couldn't get away here -- I am at fault for not raising harder on the flop -- although he would probably have called any -- there was only 1 primary draw on the board and it completed on the turn.

And then things took a dramatic turn for the better -- in fact I went on a tear:

I was putting my opponent on a flush draw here, and I was willing to pay off a 9 since opponent was kind of short. I pretended to have missed high cards, let him take a stab at the pot on the turn and the check-raised him (almost) all-in. He committed with 77 -- drawing to 2 outs, and I prevailed.

Picking off a really poor bluff. What hand is going to check twice and then cold-call a bet and a big check-raise on this board? Certainly not a 6, and more likely a primary draw (like the FD that he picked up on the turn, or 54). I induced a huge bluff from my opponent and earned myself another $10.

I raised preflop with T9 in late position and flopped an open-ended straight draw. This is a high-implied-odds situation -- a 6 comes and a 5 will be toast. Therefore I played it passively. Everything went as planned -- a 6 arrived on turn, bingobe raised with his 5 and called my massive push. I doubt bingobe would call me with his gutshot had I continue-bet.

KK vs AQ preflop all-in. I was overtaken on the flop, but running 4 clubs gave me a flush and the winning hand -- the righteous one prevailed.

I love floating. I called a preflop raise OOP with 55 and then threw in a decent check-raise to see whether opponent disliked the flop enough to give up. When he called I put him on QQ / JJ / 99. On the turn I caught my miracle 5, the pot size was similar to the amount we each had behind, opponent could be drawing live to 6 outs (JJ) or 10 outs (99), so it was an easy push. Opponent called with QT -- TPGK, and he was drawing dead. LOL @ him for raising that hand in BB preflop.

AA vs KK, massive preflop all-in against a knowledgable opponent. My hand held up. Standard stuff.

A min. raise preflop and a much larger bet on flop by a no-so-brilliant opponent usually means a big overpair, which means I have him on the ropes. He called my check-raise and the turn was a 3rd heart -- not a card that I liked. If he had a heart in his hand he would have like 15 outs against my 2-pairs, so I overbet pushed. Opponent called. River was a 4th heart, giving me a flush that I didn't need and didn't want to see. But opponent only had black Aces, and I collected yet another nice pot.

AQ, standard preflop raise, and flopped the straight. Opponent called flop with a gutshot and raised turn when he improved to a combo draw -- which was really bad play, coz I had the opportunity to reraise him all-in. He called and didn't improve. Had he just flat-called turn and rivered the backdoor flush I probably would have paid him off fully, and had he missed I would only scoop up a $14 and not a $70 pot.
